What Costume Are You Wearing?

Nicole Hillman

Halloween is when the ghosts, goblins, and witches appear. At least for a day, we can slip into someone other than who we really are. We have many favorite disguises.

Like to scare people? Maybe we dress up as a mummy, perhaps a monster with fake blood all over, or our favorite horror creature. One might dress up as a princess or ballerina so as to float around the room like the prettiest girl in the world? How about the costumes that are objects like a baby bottle, flower, or a truck? What about the different professions? Didn’t we always want to dress up as a doctor, nurse, policeman, or a fireman. And we cannot forget about dressing up like someone in a cartoon, TV show, or movie. How many Lucys or Supermen have you seen over the years?

When we put on costumes we take on a whole new identity. Personalities change even when we dress up like an object. How we react to things and deal with people changes for that brief time. Halloween is the one time of the year we can outwardly be someone else or something else without any consequences.

Do we ever do that with God? Do we let the person that God created us to be take a back seat? As humans we often try to be people that impress others. But do we ever really succeed? God knows our true identities and wants us to be the persons He created. He doesn’t want us to hide behind a mask. He wants us to take off these masks and costumes and be the sons and daughters of God.

Where do we find our true identity? Listen to your heart; listen to the Holy Spirit talking to you. Be open to His will. God reveals who we are meant to be.

So this Halloween have fun dressing up as a demon, Snow White, or Sponge Bob Square Pants. But after Halloween don’t just take off those costume masks… take off all your masks and be the person God created you to be.
