The time has come, the walrus said,
to speak of many things:
Of weekend football, back-to-school,
and all that autumn brings.
Oh yes, it's jarring, I'll admit,
this sudden mid-year shift,
to put the brakes on summer fun,
our carefree world adrift.
The urge to crush the clock alarm,
so early and so cruel!
To work, to school, to jammed commute!
Try not to lose your cool.
The teacher speaks, the boss commands.
We hear and yet we don't.
We daydream of more wistful times.
Don't make me work! I won't!
But when we pass this crucible
of Fall's transition woes,
the pleasure of discovery,
like harvest color, shows.
Our friends are back. What's new? What's up?
There's so much more to do.
Halloween and Turkey Day
and Christmas beckon, too.
So as September thus unfolds,
this season is a gift.
Our loving God will see us through
and give our souls a lift.
