This is one of my favorite Communion songs.

Lyrics

Refrain
Revive us, O God,
breathe into us
the way of your wisdom,
the depth of your trust.
You are our hope,
you are our light, O God.
1. Weary from the burden of ignorance grown,
trembling in terror, can hearts be transformed?
Longing for you to draw near,
before we cry out you already hear. And
2. Weakened by judgment, where is our strength?
Confined by confusion, our spirits are spent.
But this sickness no longer can hide;
when we choose your way, choose your truth,
when we choose life, you
Final Refrain
Revive us, O God,
breathe into us
the way of your wisdom,
the depth of your trust.
You are our hope,
you are our light, O God.
Revive us.
Revive us, O God,
breathe into us
the way of your wisdom,
the depth of your trust.
You are our hope,
you are our light, O God.

Artist Reflection

v. re-vive

1. To bring back to life or consciousness.

I wrote this song several years ago for the celebration of the medical and support staff of St. Rose Hospital, in Hayward, California. These are folks who live and work in the day-to-day efforts of welcoming life, healing life, and walking with others from life to death. People who work in this field and other fields of service and sacrifice often find themselves in need of revival.

Among the many songs I've written, this is among my favorite. The song speaks directly about the need to revive, recover and resurrect. If you've lived for any short amount of time — you know what I mean. And God's presence is the source of that revival, recovery and resur-rection!

One of the mainstays of my ministry are parish missions. Some call them parish retreats or renewals. I call them revivals. However, a rose by any other name...

Evangelization is another close relative of "revival." Evangelization is really the act of "waking up the church." Waking them up from what? You fill in the blank. What do you think you need waking from? What do you think the church needs to wake from? What do we all need to wake from?

Complacency? Fatigue? Confusion? Arrogance? Apathy? Indifference? Religious Supremacy? Religious fundamentalism and literalism? Bigotry and prejudice? Homophobia? Sexism? Militarism? Consumerism?

The list is endless. You fill in the blanks for you. What about me?

I need a physical, emotional and spiritual revival every day it seems. Traveling on airplanes away from home takes a heavy toll on the whole Manibusan family. So much so that thoughts of early retirement from a traveling ministry occupy most of my brain. Physically, I'm exhausted. Emotionally, I'm wrecked. And spiritually, I'm in constant rising and falling . . .

I'm alive.

Revive us, O God — bring us back to life, God; to consciousness about our mission to welcome everyone and exclude no one . . . to the sacred in all life in its wondrous variety!

Breathe into us — your Holy Spirit; your very presence that transforms, heals, renews, and resurrects us!

The way of your wisdom, the depth of your trust — Sophia; Your Wisdom and Your trust in us; to love You and love one another as ourselves . . .

You are our Hope — really, You are our hope.

You are our Light, O God — really, You are. You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before all!
