LyricsRefrain: ©2004 Text by Sarah Hart, Text and Music by Angus McDonell. Published by OCP. All rights reserved. Artist ReflectionThrough God's mercy, Our Lady comes to us in many different ways. Her many titles bear witness to the varied ways in which she seeks to draw us closer to her Son: Our Lady of Chestahova, Our Lady of Lourdes, Our Lady of Fatima. And then there is Our Lady of Guadalupe. Through divine wisdom, Mary appeared to a small and humble Juan Diego, an indigenous person who converted to Catholicism through the Spanish missionaries in Mexico. Juan Diego was reluctant to heed Our Lady's request to ask the bishop to build a shrine in her honor, and yet eventually he yielded to Mary's graceful and gentle prodding. Through the obedience of the "little Indian," as many as 10 million people converted to the Catholic faith. Our Lady of Guadalupe is our advocate as she is the Patroness of the Americas. Pope John Paul II described Our Lady as the "bright new dawn" which found its way into the refrain of this song. I had the honor and pleasure of working with a wonderful spiritandsong musician, Sarah Hart, who crafted most of the lyrics for this song. Since Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in Latin America, I wanted to draw musical influences from that part of the world. Therefore I used a soft samba feel for the rhythm. The harmony is taken from standard jazz harmony emphasizing the II-V-I progression. Hardly a day goes by when I don't ask for Our Lady to intercede for me, my family, my current ministry, and for the world. The rosary is a daily part of our family prayer life. There are innumerable graces given to those who pray the rosary. Our Lady powerfully intercedes for us every day and loves us as our heavenly Mother. Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us. - Angus McDonell |
