You are higher than all of our questions, you are deeper than all of our needs, wider than all that we can imagine; you are greater than anything.
You are stronger than all of our burdens, you are sweeter than all of our dreams, closer than all the air that surrounds us; you are greater than anything.
You are holy, holy God almighty, God with us. You are holy, holy God almighty, God with us.
You bring joy into all of our sadness, you bring peace into all of our pain, shining light into all of our darkness; you are greater than anything.
Ever before us and ever beside us, ever above us and ever behind us, ever around us and ever within us, and always God, God with us.
I remember writing this really well... Jayme (Thompson) and I had a morning session to write. We (as girls often do!) spent the first hour of our time just talking. We each had very recently left big Nashville publishing houses to take jobs as writers for smaller companies. The switch for each of us was SO great, so the right thing, and yet so scary. Change is always hard, and really hard in the tightly knit community of Nashville songwriters. We talked a lot about our fears, admitted our frailties, expressed our uncertainties about our places and futures in a shaky, at best, music industry.
I'm still not sure how we got there, but we started talking about how amazing God is; that He who could do anything -- order the stars, part the seas, etc. -- is the same God who knows every hair on our heads. How great, almighty, vast He is, and yet He knows exactly what we're feeling; our fears, our hopes, our uncertainties. A high, almighty, holy God, who was WITH US; not just with us, but within us. Indwelling. We started writing "God With Us" right away, and I remember finishing it in a matter of 30 minutes. I also recall Jayme saying "Sarah, this is our song", to which I replied "unh-huh (I was still writing out lyrics...), and she said "I mean, OUR song. Right now".
