Artist Reflection

As a resident of Tempe, Arizona -- home of Arizona State University -- I have had my fill of interesting conversations with people eager to challenge my faith. Here in Tempe, there is a popular place to hang-out called Mill Avenue. Mill is a small street that runs north to south with about 10 small streets that run east to west parallel to it. If there were one place that I could think of  that would reflect American culture at it’s best and worst it would be Mill Avenue. On any given night, there are skinheads, preppies, jocks, street preachers, skaters, homeless, musicians, dancers, devil worshipers, and everything in between!

In the early 90’s I used to go down to Mill Avenue quite a bit with my friends from church. Sometimes we would bring our instruments and sing worship songs and talk to passers-by about our faith. On one such occasion, I found myself in a conversation with a guy who was my age (around 20) who told me he was homeless. He told me that he believed in God, but not a God who cared about him or what he did with his life. I specifically remember asking him if he had dreams about his life and what he would
become some day. He laughed at me (as if the question was sarcastic) and said he was
just  killin’ time. That line “I’m just killing time” later became the phrase that would inspire me to write the song “Change Your World” years later.

I believe that God has a specific plan for all of his children whether they are homeless,
poor, wealthy, sick, or whatever! When I speak to youth groups, I tell them God has a plan for their lives regardless of what circle they run with. Conversion only happens when there are relationships. Who better to convert homeless people to Christ than someone who has been homeless? Who better to reach out to the spiritually sick and poor
than someone who has been sick and poor.

The question is not whether God can use us, the question is whether we are willing to allow the Holy Spirit to work through us so we can change our world. When we step aside from our pride and ego, and let God’s Spirit work, great things can happen!
