The song, "Each Time I Say Jesus," for me is a reminder of the tremendous power in the name of the Lord. One day, as these things happen, a friend was walking through the neighbourhood, giving out rosaries and these little cards that said Jesus on the front, and then on the back, was written words to this effect: "Each time I say Jesus, there are blessings," and "Each time I say Jesus, there is joy in my heart." It really made me think. Imagine if speaking the name of Jesus could actually transform me and the world around me.
I realized that the name of Jesus is a prayer in and of itself. His name is a shield. Scripture says, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower... the righteous runs into it and is safe" (Proverbs 18:10). And His name is holy. To speak His name in reverence is to bring oneself into the remembrance of that reality of His absolute holiness.
In the song, we say the name of Jesus over and over. It has been interesting to hear people's reactions. Sometimes people have criticized the song for its repetitiveness, but then upon hearing the song another few times, they have said "I understand it &mdash I get it."
The interesting thing to me is what we enjoy as Christians, particularly as Catholics. This relationship that we enjoy with Christ is so beyond anything. We can utter the name above all other names, the name of the One who is most holy. In fact, we are encouraged to do so. We can enter into His holy habitation by the work of the cross, and with the help of His Holy Spirit and not die… we can eat His flesh and drink His blood and be one with Him. Is this not truly amazing?
"Each Time I Say Jesus" for us is a song that goes from high praise into deep worship, all around speaking His name. You know, that friend who was walking around the neighbourhood has not since done her canvassing again. I feel it was a special day for me to have received that little card. God taught me this very important lesson, and opened out for me the power, the joy, the love the healing that is available all through a beautifully simple act of calling on His name. God is good. I will praise His name forever. Amen.
