Lyrics

Refrain (Ascension Psalm text)
God mounts his throne to shouts of joy:
a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
Refrain (Common Psalm text)
God mounts his throne to shouts of joy,
to shouts, to shouts of joy.
1. All you peoples, clap your hands, shout to God,
shout to God with cries of gladness.
For the Lord, the Most High, the awesome,
is the great king over all the earth.
2. God mounts his throne amid shouts of joy;
the Lord, amid trumpet blasts.
Sing praise to God, to God, sing praise;
sing praise to our king, sing praise.
3. For king of all the earth is God;
sing hymns of praise.
God reigns over all the nations,
God sits upon his holy throne.

The feast of the Ascension of Jesus into heaven is one of my favorites. How cool is it that Jesus died, rose again, then hung around for 40 days in his glorified body just to let the apostles know that everything was going to be okay? He was making surprise appearances all over the place and explaining to these disciples all that the scriptures had been fulfilled. He didn't just disappear or bail out on them after that upper room experience. Jesus revealed the Father's plan to these eyewitnesses who would share all of those first-hand experiences with us.

Then, if that wasn't enough, he tells them [I'm paraphrasing]: "Hey guys, you have everything you need to take it from here. The cherubim are waiting and I really miss seeing my Dad. In a few days, the Spirit will come and fire you up. You are not alone, though. I'll be with you 'til the end of time, so don't hesitate to call." Then he is suddenly taken up into the clouds right before them . . . Whoa!! This guy knows how to make an exit!!! That is worthy of some clapping and some joyful shouting! Just think, what if that happened to one of your friends? After a serious freak-out, you'd be telling everybody!

So with a joyful groove, let's spread the Good News, clap our hands, and shout for joy! Our risen Jesus takes his place as King over all of heaven and earth.

"God mounts his throne to shouts of joy, a blare of trumpets for the Lord!"
