1. On this day, dear Jesus, may we sing for you a song for you. We're so joyous, Jesus, anything for you. But we know that though heaven hear us in our humble chorus, there is nothing that we can do for you, like you did for us. 2. On this day, dear Jesus, may we give to you a gift or two. Something for you, Jesus, something bright and new, but we know that though heaven see it and our hearts believe it, there is nothing that we can give to you, like you gave to us. 3. On this day, dear Jesus, may our love come through in all we do. O our precious Jesus, if our love is true then maybe when we bow before you, as one heart adore you, you can teach us to give our love to you, like you love us. On this day, dear Jesus, Jesus.

I think it's somewhere between bizarre and arrogant to write a Christmas song with any hope that it will "matter" or "belong" with all the classics. But that didn't stop me trying! I think of "On This Day" as a low-octane song, in that it doesn't exhibit Olympic aspirations, it merely wants to get a simple job done. It's job, I think, is to make a sweet moment of giving a gift to Jesus at Christmas, instead of ME receiving a gift.
For years I have tried to manage my anger at Santa Claus for commandeering Our Guy's special day (especially here in the United States) and this is the gentlest way I've hit upon (notice my use of "hit," there's that ANGER again!) to turn the spotlight back on Jesus. The Lord has been so sweet to us, I thought "how lovely to return the favor." I really hope you like the song and that it helps us all tweak our "spirit of giving."

Lyrics
On this day, dear Jesus,
may we sing for you
a song for you.
We're so joyous, Jesus,
anything for you.
But we know that
though heaven hear us
in our humble chorus,
there is nothing we can do for you,
like you did for us.
On this day, dear Jesus,
may we give to you
a gift or two.
Something for you, Jesus,
something bright and new,
but we know that though
heaven see it
and our hearts believe it,
there is nothing that we can give to you,
like you gave to us.
On this day, dear Jesus,
may our love come through
in all we do.
O our precious Jesus,
if our heart is true
then maybe when we
bow before you,
as one heart adore you,
you can teach is to give our love to you,
like you love us.
On this day, dear Jesus, Jesus.
