Artist Reflection
Right after the onslaught of Hurricane Katrina, I was watching all kinds of footage of the devastation taking place along Katrina's destructive path. I started thinking about how all of these people were rendered poor by wind and water. Hours later, I was at a gas station and I started overhearing people complaining about gas prices. It was really hard to hear what seems like such trite complaints when just hundreds of miles away, brothers and sisters were suffering such significant loss due to the hurricane. After that experience, I decided to sit down and write a song — not so much a song for the victims of that storm. How could I when I didn't experience it myself? But, rather, I wanted to write a song about the Beatitudes, and maybe look at them from a different perspective. Despite our poverty and pride, despite our self-centeredness and disparity, God's plan for us does not shift. Though we might experience suffering, he has a plan that is unwavering, that is for our good and not for our harm, so out of that is where this song took root. - Matt Maher |
